Horses teeth are hypsodont. That is, they continually erupt out of the upper and lower jaw. Ideally this eruption should match the wear that teeth would be exposed to in the natural conditions where horses evolved.
Because horses are now seldom grazing this hard, dry, native vegetation, their teeth don’t get enough wear. This can result in many functional disturbances including teeth developing sharp points which laceratesoft cheek and tongue tissue.
